Green Lipped Mussel, also known as a New Zealand Mussel, differs from other mussel species with its unusual colours: usually brown/green shell with a green 'lip' around it edges. It is one of the largest species of mussels - it can reach 240 mm in length.

These mussels have been used as food by native Maori people for centuries. They are known for their anti-inflammatory properties as they are rich in Glycoproteins. They also contain Omega-3 fatty acids: EPA and DHA, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

There have been some studies and clinical trials about potential use of Green Lipped Mussels for easing joint pain and reducing inflammation, however none have been conclusive.
